How To Refinish A Plasma TV Cabinet

Refinishing a plasma TV cabinet is a great way to save yourself some money over having to purchase a new model or purchasing a plasma mount, while also restoring life into the old cabinet. If you have a do it yourself attitude, the job is going to be incredibly easy. By following the basic steps that we have outlined for you below, you can complete the project with relative ease, and know that you are going in the right direction at each step.

Step #1) Sand The Large Sections – You want to complete the easiest parts of the project first. This is going to be sanding the larger sections of wood that are exposed. You want to start by using a 160 grit sand paper that will rough up the surface of the wood, and then finish off with a 220 grit paper that will clean up the roughness, and give a stable surface to stain in later steps.

Step #2) Sand The Trim – Sanding the trim is going to take a lot more time than sanding the larger sections of wood will. You want to use the same grit sand papers as you did in step #1, 160 grit to start, and remove the old paint or stain, and then finish up with 220 grit to clean up the rough edges and prepare the surface for staining. Make sure that you get down into the cracks and crevaces that are in the trim, to ensure that the stain will be applied evenly in later steps.

Step #3) Prepare To Stain – When you are finished sanding down the large sections, and the trim pieces, you are going to want to move the cabinet outdoors in preparation for staining. You also want to make sure that you have gloves available to prevent the stain from getting onto your hands, and wearing old clothes that you are not worried about getting covered in stain.

Step #4) Apply The First Coat – Using a soft bristled brush, you can begin laying down the first coat of stain. Apply ample amounts of stain, but make sure that you do not have any runs or excess pools building up.

Step #5) Apply Final Coat(s) – After you have allowed the first coat plenty of time to dry, you can begin applying a second coat, and possibly a third coat to achieve the level of depth in the stain that you are going for.
